Crime drama is the most popular subgenre of thriller to UK audiences, due to the hidden elements of the real world that they become exposed to.
Despite the increase of streaming, thriller films are still in higher demand than tv shows. In 2023, the demand for thriller films peaked at 78.2 times the average, whilst the demand for thriller tv shows peaked at 63.2 times the average.
In 2021, 38.8% of all adults digitally consumed the thriller genre rather than horror or sci-fi (32.2% and 29%). 34.8% of 18–29-year-olds, 37.6% of 30–49-year-olds, and 44.4% of 50–64-year-olds preferred thriller, highlighting that the genre is consumed and enjoyed by all ages, depending on the subgenre.
2000s thriller series ‘Dexter’ achieved an average rating of 8.5, making it one of the highest rated chronological thriller series, achieving #2 of the best thriller TV series on ranker. Its audience is 2x more likely to be male at 24-45 years old.
The Last of Us achieved a peak in demand of thriller series when it released in March 2023. Its audience rank it #1 TV adaptation which lived up to expectations, aged 17-30 years old. It has a large younger fanbase, who share edits of the show on TikTok and Instagram, creating content to help build its audience.
