Statement of Intent
For my thriller series bus stop advertisement, I will ensure that there is no gore, blood, or explicit images seen, in order to comply to the rules of the ASA, where the poster must be appropriate for all, particularly in a public place such as a bus stop. My series is about teenagers facing the dark consequences of their past, with an air of mystery in the plot to adhere to the thriller genre. To ensure the guidelines are followed, whilst maintaining the aspects of the thriller genre, I will use SFX makeup to make a bruise on the model, highlighting the implied violence present in the series, without scaring or offending people who are not the target audience. As the series will be published on a streaming service, there will be no watershed time, so I will highlight and enlarge the ITVX logo to imply that caution must be taken by parents if allowing their children to watch this particular show on the service, as there will be dark themes unsuitable for younger people.
For the show to be relatable and suitable, I must ensure that the characters are presented in a positive light. I plan to represent two different social groups (upper-class males and lower-class females) to highlight the difference of characters and financial situations in a community, whilst showcasing that each group has a strength. The show will be centered around reliving and battling the repercussions of the traumatic aspects and bad decisions of your past, so I will ensure the characters have serious expressions to display their bravery and confidence of revisiting their past, drawing the audience in to discover their backstories. One poster may use fearful expressions, adhering to the thriller genre, which creates a binary opposition to the characters’ confidence, implying an acceptance that people have flaws, encouraging the audience of different genders and classes to watch the series to find a character they may relate to in both strengths and weaknesses.
The show will appeal to the target audience of 16–25-year-olds by representing them on the poster; my models will be of this age group, portraying the story of young, relatable teenagers who may have regrets about their past. This attracts the audience, as they would feel represented by the characters they are watching and their sympathetic mistakes. Additionally, the thriller genre is highly popular with young adults, as they enjoy a sense of mystery and suspense that they are potentially lacking in their own lives, so this will create excitement and anticipation for them.
